Please note that submitting the form does not guarantee membership. A band representative will reach out to you when new member opportunities become available.

Women aged 21 and older are welcome to join, regardless of race, religion, income, sexual orientation, or musical experience.

Did you know that 90% of Batala Washington’s members had never played an instrument before joining? Don’t worry—we’ll teach you! With our guidance, you’ll be performing with us in no time, bringing the rhythms of Samba-Reggae to life!

Joining the band is a big time commitment, but we work hard to keep the financial costs as low as possible. We’ll supply you with an instrument and costumes at no charge (a deposit is required). After attending a certain number of required rehearsals, new members will purchase a Batalá Starter Kit, which includes:

INSTRUMENT & COSTUME

$350 (deposit)

We require a security deposit check that will not be deposited unless your instrument and costume are lost. This check will be returned if you leave the band.

t-shirts

$20-$30 each

Members are required to wear Batalá shirts to every practice. Some Batalá Washington shirts may be required as a costume option. You’re welcome to purchase them all at once or one at a time as needed.

belts & mallets

$35 (belts) and $25 (mallets)

These can be purchased from the band or from somewhere else if you wish.

knee & hearing protection

These personal items can be purchased in-store or online from a variety of vendors.

Members of Batalá Washington, an all-women Afro-Brazilian band that plays Samba-Reggae rhythms practice in Hancock Park in Washington, DC, Saturday, June 12, 2021. Batalá in Washington, D.C. is part of a larger Batalá family created in 1997 by Giba Gonçalves. Born and raised in Salvador, Brazil, Giba was living in Paris when he first had the idea for the band. Open to anyone with an interest in learning the samba-reggae beat, the band started off with 60 people. From Paris it spread to other cities in France, Belgium and the United Kingdom. In 2003, the band finally made its way back to its origins, brought to Brazil by Paulo Garcia, also the founder of the Portsmouth Batalá . Composer and musical director, Giba enlisted the help of friends from the bands and from Salvador in order to create the visual identity of the band. The instruments and clothings are all manufactured in Salvador, Bahia, where the band has a social program that gives jobs to many families. From there they are shipped to the bands around the world. In 2007, the newest branch of the Batalá band was created in Washington, DC, expanding the reach of the band’s music to the United States. Today, there are 30 and counting Batalá bands around the world.
